Foils

Resin infusion of a daggerboard using moldless construction

Moldless Construction of Foils

Another approach to foil construction is to CNC cut the core from foam or wood, and then lay up the laminate over this precision core.  This can be a cost effective option for many foils, and can produce an outstanding foil shape that would be extremely time consuming (or impossible) to reproduce by hand.  One can expect tolerances of between .005" and .025" depending on the skill of the laminator and the thickness/complexity of the laminate schedule.  For thicker laminates, Turn Point Design uses resin infusion (pictured) to insure uniform laminate saturation and increase the strength to weight ratio of the foils.
